Brief der Bundesvorsitzenden an die schwedischen Grünen
Berlin, 6th February 2009
Open letter of solidarity
Dear friends,
we declare our solidarity with your struggle against the rollback in the energy policy in Sweden. This struggle is not just a Swedish one, it is a European. All over Europe conservatives and libe-rals are fighting hand in hand with the lobbyists to bring back nuclear energy. They do this against the will of the majority of the people and against all considerable arguments . So, all over Europe, Greens along with the movements against nuclear power will stand up against this offence.
We Greens, whether in Sweden, Germany or wherever in Europe, know, that the risks of nucle-ar power are as real and menacing now as they have always been. Not to mention the possibi-lity of terrorist attacks and nuclear proliferation to questionable regimes. Nuclear energy is not part of the solution to climate change, but part of the problem. It is a dead-end technology and investments in nuclear energy will divert much-needed funds from the promotion of sustainable energy production. While the lobbyists of nuclear energy always speak of a "renaissance of nuclear energy" so far not much has happened. In 2008 not a single new nuclear power plant was connected to the grid. The number of nuclear power plants througout the world is decli-ning. And nuclear power covers only 2,5% of the world-wide energy consumption.
But to end the use of this dangerous technology we have to continue our common struggle. We should make the European election campaign to a vote on nuclear energy - so Europe's citizens can decide whether Europe shall foster renewables or nuclear energy. And we think it would be a good idea to use the EGP congress in March to debate further on the our strategy against nuclear power.
With best wishes
